EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
