Users Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
